Winners and Losers: Bowl Season

1/7/2019

The college football season is finally over. With that being said, there were some memorable moments of the bowl season and some that certain fans would like to forget. Who won the bowl season and who was flat out busted?
  • Winner: Trevor Lawrence: The highly-touted five-star quarterback felt no pressure in the national championship, throwing for 347 yards and three touchdowns in a rout of #1 Alabama, 44-16. Clemson will be in good hands for the next few years if Lawrence decides to stick around.
  • Winner: California-TCU: The Cheez-It Bowl featured nine turnovers, all of them interceptions, making for some highly entertaining football. Normally, low-scoring games are boring, especially if they end with a score of 10-7. However, the back-and-forth feel of a game can make for some randomness with an interception killing almost every drive. TCU won by that score in overtime.
  • Winner: Texas: Defeating the Georgia Bulldogs, 28-21, in the Sugar Bowl shows that Longhorn football is finally back. It was Texas's first 10-win season since 2009, with the Longhorns forcing two turnovers in the game. If you're looking for a sleeper for the CFP, look no further than the Texas Longhorns.
  • Winner: Daniel Jones: Jones had a mammoth Independence Bowl, throwing for 423 yards and five touchdowns en route to a 56-27 victory for Duke. The quarterback also saw his draft stock rise to a potential first-round draft pick. Speaking of draft stock...
  • Loser: Tua Tagovailoa: A finalist for the Heisman, Tagovailoa saw his draft stock plummet in the championship game. He went 22 for 34 with two interceptions (including a pick-six) and had a hard time finishing drives for Alabama. If Tagovailoa is to be a good draft pick come 2020, he'll have to be better than what transpired in the championship.
  • Loser: Michigan Wolverines: There was so much hype surrounding the Michigan Wolverines heading into the Ohio State game. Hell, they even had their own "revenge" tour. But once the Buckeyes put 62 up on Michigan in that fateful game, the wheels came off. They followed that up with a 41-15 blowout loss at the hands of Florida in the Peach Bowl. Jim Harbaugh better find a way to do better against top opponents or else there will be more whispers about his big-game incompetence coming his way...
  • Loser: Redbox Bowl: Remember what I said about how boring low-scoring games were with the exception of this season's Cheez-It Bowl? This was proof of the boring side of low-scoring affairs. Up until the last six drives of the game, only four drives did not result in a punt (excluding the last one before halftime). In fact, the halftime score was 0-0. The game eventually ended with Oregon pulling it out by a score of 7-6.
  • Loser: Central Florida: With a chance to prove that the Knights shouldn't be taken lightly, Central Florida instead fell victim to LSU at the Fiesta Bowl. A 40-32 loss to the Tigers ended Central Florida's undefeated streak at 25 games and showed the committee why they were right in not even making Central Florida an afterthought in the playoff discussion. No claimed championships for the Knights this season.
Final Rankings:
  1. Clemson
  2. Ohio State
  3. Alabama
  4. Notre Dame
