Urban Meyer has had a legendary coaching career. He's never lost to Michigan. He helped popularize the spread offense that became prevalent in college football. He has three national titles and a record of 186-32 lifetime in his coaching career. He's won seven conference championships during his time with Utah, Florida, and Ohio State. This was all in spite of the fact that he's made a questionable hire with Zach Smith and has had numerous players arrested or involved in some trouble on his watch. But after the 2019 Rose Bowl, Urban Meyer will retire for good.
It's not because of the various scandals that have haunted his career. Unfortunately, he suffers from an arachnoid cyst which causes immense headaches under stress. He's also had gastroesophageal reflux disease, which affected his time at Florida. With Urban Meyer gone due to his health issues, how will Ohio State do?
The man replacing him, offensive coordinator Ryan Day, is endorsed by Meyer himself. Day actually has some experience as a head coach, replacing Meyer after he was placed on administrative leave for his role in the Zach Smith domestic violence incident. Day went 3-0, which included a victory over a ranked TCU team. Day also has had past experiences as a quarterbacks coach under Chip Kelly in San Francisco and Philadelphia. Thus, Day has had experience at both the collegiate level and at the professional level.
If Ryan Day is to succeed at Ohio State, he will need to pull in some solid recruiting classes. Urban Meyer had a penchant for raking in top recruits, even in Ohio. Meyer's ability to bring in offensive talent had made him a coaching legend. Day will be put to the test on his recruiting mettle. Another thing that Day will have to bring to the table is the ability to be flexible and adjust in his coaching. A big part of why Urban Meyer's had great success against Michigan (and everyone else) was because of Meyer's ability to adjust. When Jim Harbaugh (or any coach) kept running the same scheme or style, Meyer would adjust and pick that style or scheme apart. Adjustments will be key for Day and it might take Day a little bit to get used to in his coaching career.
Ryan Day will have huge shoes to fill when Urban Meyer leaves after the 2019 Rose Bowl. Whether Ohio State will continue its run of success will be contingent on how Day does with his team and his recruiting.
