Where Will The Big Free Agents Sign?

11/27/2018

This offseason has some of the biggest free agents on the market. Big deals will be given, probably to the tune of $200 million+ for at least seven years maximum. While a couple names have come off the market, there are still a few that need destinations. Where will the biggest free agents land? Here are my predictions.
  • Bryce Harper: Philadelphia Phillies: Phillies management and ownership have gone on record saying that "they are looking to spend big this offseason." That means that they're in the running for practically any free agent, especially since they currently have $68,933,333 in payroll (20th in baseball). The Phillies could use a big bat or two in their lineup and should land Harper. It's a possibility that Manny Machado will join Harper on the Phillies considering the low payroll, but...
  • Manny Machado: New York Yankees: What? Did you expect the Yankees to just sit silently this offseason and let free agents pass by? If you're wondering what will happen to Didi Gregorius, he just had Tommy John surgery on his right throwing arm and will be out for a good chunk of next season. Gregorius will be a trade chip for the Yankees to use in the future if Machado signs with the Yankees.
  • Patrick Corbin: Los Angeles Angels: The Yankees also make sense here, although getting James Paxton makes it less likely. Owner Arte Moreno should look to build on the opportunity to build his rotation with an ace, although he can try and get Zach Greinke (that is a crazy idea, though).
  • Jed Lowrie: Oakland Athletics: Lowrie likes it out in Oakland, where he has seen a breakout in his career. The A's will have their 'Moneyball' lineup from last year mostly intact if they keep Lowrie.
  • Dallas Keuchel: Philadelphia Phillies: Philadelphia will either try and go for Patrick Corbin or another pitcher like Keuchel. As mentioned earlier, Philly has plenty of money to spend and they're looking to contend next season.
  • Charlie Morton: Houston Astros: The Astros are stuck trying to retain either Keuchel or Charlie Morton. But Morton has stated his desire to stay in Houston, so it seems like Keuchel will walk elsewhere. The Astros will have some players coming off the books this offseason, so the money should be there for Morton. Morton will probably be given a modest deal year-wise, given his age (35).
  • Yasmani Grandal: San Diego Padres: Like the Phillies, the San Diego Padres are looking to take that next step. What better way to do that than to get one of the better catchers in the game in Grandal?
  • Craig Kimbrel: Boston Red Sox: The reliever market is rather thin, especially in the closer department. The Red Sox don't have many trade chips in their system to dangle for a closer if a team such as Seattle were to make theirs available. Therefore, the best option for the Red Sox is for Kimbrel to return.
