The First Quarter Review of the NFL Season

10/2/2018

Believe it or not, the NFL season is a quarter of the way through. The first quarter of the season has been an eventful one, filled with storylines and news. What came out of the first quarter of the season?
  • Patrick Mahomes: The Kansas City quarterback has been a catalyst for the Chiefs' 4-0 start. Mahomes has yet to throw an interception and has already thrown for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns, completing 65.2% of his passes. In fact, he threw for 192 yards outside the pocket against Denver last night, the most for a QB in the past ten years. Mahomes is even more likable considering he sounds like Kermit the Frog.

  • The NFL's Revised Roughing the Passer Rule: In order to protect the NFL players (namely the quarterbacks), Roger Goodell and the NFL made some revisions to the NFL's roughing the passer call. Essentially, just giving Ben Roethlisberger a bop on the head results in a 15-yard penalty and a first down, which is what Tampa Bay quickly learned in their Monday Night loss to Pittsburgh. Green Bay's Clay Matthews has been the victim of the revised rule, having been called twice for roughing the passer in the first two weeks of the NFL season.
  • Contenders Not Looking Like Contenders: The NFL season hasn't been so kind to the preseason contenders for Super Bowl 53. The Patriots were off to a 1-2 start, getting embarrassed by Detroit on Sunday Night football. Pittsburgh's secondary has looked disastrous, resulting in a 1-2-1 start. The Vikings got humiliated by lowly Buffalo at home and now sit at 1-2-1 as well. New England seems poised to turn things around after defeating Miami at home. But will Pittsburgh and Minnesota be able to turn things around before it's too late?
  • The Browns Won! Cleveland finally got their first win in nearly two seasons, defeating the Jets a couple Thursdays ago, 21-17. Cleveland may finally have the franchise quarterback they've long awaited for as well: Baker Mayfield showed promise in that Thursday night win for the Browns.
  • Return of the Mack: Khalil Mack may have been the biggest acquisition to date in the NFL season. Chicago is off to a 3-1 start thanks to Mack and the revitalized Bears defense. The Bears linebacker is second in the NFL in sacks with five and has Bears fans reminiscing about 1985 as Mack is helping return the Bears to their Super Bowl-winning glory. Overall, the Bears are fifth in total defense in the NFL, yielding only 1,178 yards this season and are fourth in total yards allowed per game with 294.5 yards per game allowed.
