The 49ers' Offseason Checklist

The San Francisco 49ers entered the offseason with a heap of promise. Ending the 2017 season winning six of their last seven, the Niners are hoping to ride a wave of momentum into next season in hopes of matching the Pittsburgh Steelers' six Super Bowl victories. Here's a synopsis of what the Niners need to do during the offseason.
  • Sign Jimmy Garoppolo to a Long-Term Deal (done): The good thing about Garoppolo's five-year, $137.5 million extension is that Garoppolo won't be the highest-paid quarterback for too long. Quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins (an original target of the 49ers, ironically) and Aaron Rodgers will fetch more money this offseason (along with other franchise quarterbacks in the next offseason), making the deal look fairly cheap. The 49ers are also getting a younger franchise quarterback as opposed to shelling out money for a quarterback close to the wrong side of 30.
  • Lock Up Certain Offensive Linemen (partially done): San Francisco has a young offensive line, led by the likes of Trent Brown. They locked up center Daniel Kilgore for three more seasons, lauding his leadership on the team. Brown will probably be the next target of locking up, although injuries and being out of shape may hurt his case.
  • Purge the Free Agent Market (not done): The Niners should swoop in on Jarvis Landry and give Garoppolo a slot receiver to work with. Other players to consider for San Francisco include Sammy Watkins (if he isn't franchise-tagged), Jeremy Hill, Justin Pugh and Alex Okafor.
  • Draft for Need (not done): With the Niners having a plethora of picks in this year's draft, San Francisco can fill plenty of needs and fill depth. They can stick with their first-round pick and go for a guy like Tremaine Edwards or Bradley Chubb or they can go crazy and trade up for Saquon Barkley. Either way, the Niners have plenty of options to work with in the draft.
