Welcome to another edition of Steam Review! I've been on Steam lately, so I'm reviewing games from the platform. This edition takes a look at Streets of Rage 4, a game developed by Dotemu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crash Games. Streets of Rage 4 was released not too long ago, with its release date dropping on April 30 of this year for the Nintendo Switch, XBOX One, and the Playstation 4.
A continuation of the hit series from SEGA, Streets of Rage 4 takes place ten years after the events of Streets of Rage 3. Mr. X is no more, but Wood Oak City has fallen under siege from an attack from his children. They do this by brainwashing the city through hypnotic music found in the underground. It's up to Blaze Fielding, Axel Stone, and friends to put a stop to this.
Streets of Rage 4 is a nice beat-'em-up to play. There is plenty of replay value, with numerous unlockable content and different modes to play. Each character has their strengths and weaknesses, with each character a fit for different players. For example, Cherry Hunter is the speed character, with fast attacks. Floyd Iraia is the tank, being able to dish out massive damage and achieve long combos.
Streets of Rage 4 also does a great job going back to its roots. You can smash up an arcade and take on old bosses from previous Streets of Rage games. You can even unlock characters from the old Streets of Rage games to play. Streets of Rage 4 does a solid job calling back to the origins of the series.
Now, it's not to say that Streets of Rage 4 is without its flaws. The combo system can be tough for new Streets of Rage players to nail down. Even the enemies can combo you, which can induce rage from the player. There are also certain enemies that can cause frustration along the way, with some countering and playing defensive most of the time. For first-time players, this can be frustrating.
Streets of Rage 4 is still an awesome game to play. There are some flaws with the gameplay, but it's still a nice get and worth the price. If you have time during your quarantine, play Streets of Rage 4 when you have a chance.
My life! Food, sports, school. It's what it is!
