Welcome to another Steam Review, where I see whether games on Steam are worth buying! This edition covers a popular MetroidVania game, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.
Developed and published by WayForward Games, Shantae Half-Genie Hero was a kickstarter multiplatformer game. The crowdfunded game opened donations from September 2013 to December 16, 2014. Initially released on December 20, 2016, it was released for Steam and also made the Wii U, PS4, PS Vita, XBox One, and Nintendo Switch. The original release date was supposed to be September 27, 2016. However, it was postponed for six weeks "give or take."
The premise of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero takes place after Shantae: The Pirate's Curse. Shantae is woken from a deep slumber to find an opening to the Genie Realm in a subterranean cavern. There are numerous questions to be asked. Was it a dream? Was it foreshadowing of things to come? Whatever the case, Shantae must find out what's going on.
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero plays like your typical Shantae game. Collect power-ups for transformative dances, fight Risky Boots and stop her nefarious deeds, and whip baddies with your fabulous hair. However, I will say Half-Genie Hero has some hilarious dialogue. That's the charm about the series; Shantae puts its quirkiness on full display, giving you a laugh or two along the way.
Half-Genie Hero is an easy game to pick up, providing you with the necessary tools to progress. Everything controls right and it's easy to get around. Of course, this is a staple of Shantae games. However, it's worth noting how accessible it is for casual gamers to play, especially with the witty dialogue.
I loved Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and would highly recommend it. Like its descendant, Shantae and the Seven Sirens, it hits a home run with an accessible MetroidVania game. I highly recommend picking up Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for Steam if you haven't already.
My life! Food, sports, school. It's what it is!
