There were two start-up leagues that looked to provide an alternative to the NFL in the late 2010's. They were the AAF (Alliance of American Football) and the XFL. The XFL was a league that saw some spotlight in 2001, but folded after one season. Likewise, the AAF folded in 2019 mid-season.
