Do These Teams Have Staying Power?

We're already a few weeks into the MLB season and we already have some fireworks! The Dodgers are swinging right out of the gate along with the surprising Mariners, while Boston and the Chicago Cubs are limping. There are some hot teams starting off the season and they look to make some noise. The question is, will any of them have any staying power?
  • Seattle Mariners: The best record in the majors belongs to... surprise! The Seattle Mariners! With an offense that can score at will, the Mariners are breaking records and making history. They're the first MLB team to hit a home run in their first 15 games.
    • The Case For: The aforementioned offense can mash. They also have a solid combination of power and speed in the lineup. Kyle Seager is coming back later this season and should add more power and defense to the lineup.
    • The Case Against: The closer-by-committee ordeal may not last long, especially with a listless bullpen. Yusei Kikuchi has struggled with his command in the last couple games. The Mariners have committed the most errors in the majors with 19 and have the worst fielding percentage (.964).
  • San Diego Padres: With Manny Machado in tow, the Padres are somehow keeping up with the Dodgers in the NL West. In fact, the Padres have a one-game lead over LA in the NL West.
    • The Case For: Batters such as Fernando Tatis, Jr. are helping Machado bring the Padres back to relevancy. Kirby Yates is quietly one of the better closers in baseball. The NL West is supposed to be the Dodgers' division to lose this season with everyone else being weak. However, that gives San Diego an opportunity to be competitive.
    • The Case Against: As mentioned before, this is the Dodgers' division to lose. The National League is also competitive this season, so it may be hard for the young Padres to catch up.
  • Detroit Tigers: The Tigers are only a half-game back of Cleveland in the AL Central to start the season. At 8-5, Detroit has seen a young core take their first steps towards being competitive once again.
    • The Case For: Matthew Boyd (29 SO, 2.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) has finally found his control and is striking out opposing batters at alarming rates. Jordan Zimmermann has also found his groove, with an ERA of 2.50 and a WHIP of 0.78. Zimmermann and Boyd could quietly constitute one of baseball's better one-two pitching combos.
    • The Case Against: There's no hitting here. The Tigers have scored a league-worst 33 runs to start off the season. Also, this is still Cleveland's division and Minnesota appears ready to compete again.
