College Football Winners and Losers, Week Two

9/7/2019

We nearly had a monumental upset in week two of the college football season! The college football story line(s) may have been overshadowed by the Antonio Brown drama, but there is still plenty of action to go around. Who won the week and who fumbled it away?
  • Winner: Maryland: The Terrapins look like a dark horse in the Big Ten. They have amassed 142 points in their first two games, including 63 in Saturday's rout of #21 Syracuse. Maryland finished with an astounding 650 total yards in offense. Keep an eye on Josh Jackson, as the quarterback runs the fast-paced offense for Maryland.
  • Winner: Oregon: After squandering last week's game against the Auburn Tigers, #16 Oregon responded in a massive way. They lit up Nevada for 77 points as Justin Herbert threw for 310 passing yards and five touchdowns. The defense even got in on the action, with Brady Breeze recovering a fumble for a touchdown in the third quarter.
  • Loser: Texas's Squandered Opportunities in the First Quarter: The Longhorns had not one, but two drives starting at first-and-goal. They only gained eight yards out of the ordeal and got no points as a result (this seems to be a theme when teams face ranked SEC opponents). They could've used those points as LSU put 17 points on the Longhorns in the second quarter. Speaking of inept offenses...
  • Loser: Michigan's Current Offensive Scheme: If the Wolverines are to break into Josh Gattis's new offense, they better do it fast. Don't get me wrong: Army's a good team, despite just running the ball (the gimmick offense is still pretty cool). But the Black Knights took #7 Michigan to two overtimes before a fumble did Army in. Bad blocking paired with a botched fourth down almost led to the season's first major upset.
  • Loser: Nebraska: The pollsters were extremely generous with giving Nebraska a ranking at the beginning of the season. However, it seems nothing much has changed from last year's 4-8 stint, especially after last week's uninspiring win over South Alabama. The Cornhuskers squandered a 17-point lead to old nemesis Colorado as the Buffaloes won in overtime, 34-31. At least Maurice Washington looks pretty good.
Other Winners: Jalen Hurts, Akron's turnover pencil, South Carolina
Other Losers: Tennessee, Boise State's offense, Chip Kelly

Playoff Four:
  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia
  4. Ohio State
