College Football Winners and Losers, Week Six

10/7/2018

Finally! We're starting to see some giants topple! Which Davids slew their Goliaths this week?
  • Winner: Texas: Don't sleep on Texas in the race for a College Football Playoff spot. The #19 Longhorns defeated the #7 Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Shootout, 48-45. Texas did allow 21 points in the fourth quarter to let Oklahoma back in, but a win is a win. Therefore, the Longhorns should shoot up in the rankings as a result. Lil'Jordan Humphrey (what a name!) had nine catches for 133 yards and a touchdown.
  • Winner: Notre Dame in the Second Half: Amidst all the chaos in the top ten this week, Notre Dame was the biggest beneficiary. The Fighting Irish outscored #24 Virginia Tech in the second half, 28-7, behind two of Dexter Williams's three touchdown runs (97 yards and 31 yards, respectively). Overall, Williams ran for 178 yards on 17 carries to help bolster #6 Notre Dame's playoff case even further.
  • Winner: UAB: In 2014, the Dragons had to shut down their football program due to a lack of funding. It was a bittersweet moment for the school, having to leave the college football landscape. Fast forward a few years later and $27 million in funds and the Dragons are sitting at 4-1. A 28-7 victory over Louisiana Tech boosted by UAB's defense has brought the Dragons back.
  • Loser: Big 12: Their best shot for a playoff spot now lies in #9 West Virginia after Oklahoma's loss. West Virginia has a road date against Texas on November 3rd and still has to play Oklahoma. The Sooners weren't the only ranked Big 12 team to fall; their in-state rival #25 Oklahoma State also fell, losing to Iowa State.
  • Loser: Top Ten Teams: The Sooners weren't the only top ten team to fall this week. #5 LSU fell to #22 Florida, 27-19, while #8 Auburn got embarrassed by Mississippi State, 23-9. All these losses amount to leaving the door open for teams such as Washington, Central Florida, and Notre Dame to get back in the playoff race.
  • Loser: Michigan State: #20 Michigan State has entered this season a bit flat. They nearly got upset by Utah State to start off the year, then they lose on the road to Arizona State. Now, their season's shot with a 29-19 loss to Northwestern.
Other Winners: North Texas, Texas A&M, the state of Texas
Other Losers: Stanford, BYU, Syracuse

Playoff Four:
  1. Alabama
  2. Georgia
  3. Ohio State
  4. Notre Dame
