Takeaways From Week Eight in the NFL

10/29/2018

Guess what? We're halfway through the NFL season! With the NFL season chugging along towards the playoffs, who stood out and what happened this week?
  • The Seahawks Look Like Legitimate Playoff Contenders: The Legion of Boom may be no more, but the Seahawks are still playing like a playoff team. The running game has found its legs again thanks to Chris Carson, ranking ninth in rushing yards with 943 rushing yards. Even without the L.O.B., Seattle's defense still looks tough and the team is still getting turnovers (second-best in the NFL in turnover margin with +10); in Sunday's 28-14 win over Detroit, the Seahawks recovered two fumbles and nabbed an interception. Seattle could make the playoffs with Russell Wilson under center and with playing at Centurylink Field alone.
  • Pittsburgh Doesn't Really Need Le'Veon Bell Anymore: The Le'Veon Bell saga has died down a bit recently. The resurgent Steelers don't seem to care anyway: James Conner has looked like a viable replacement for Bell. Conner has 599 rushing yards, including seven rushes for more than 20 yards. He's averaging 4.7 yards a carry and has nine touchdowns on the year. Pittsburgh seems to have found their red zone threat alongside Antonio Brown in Conner, but maybe they can pair him up with Bell in the backfield if Bell ever returns.
  • Cleveland is a Mess. What Else is New: Hue Jackson is finally gone as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns., leaving behind a record of 3-36-1. Also gone is offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Once again, the Cleveland Browns look like the most dysfunctional organization in all of sports. Granted, the team is young and this is especially true for the offense. However, many will wonder if the Browns will ever find some sort of direction in the future.

Hardest Old School Diss Tracks Of All Time

10/28/2018

When Eminem dissed MGK with Killshot, it was one of the hardest diss tracks to ever drop. This brought back memories of past diss tracks, some being dropped by greats such as Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. Here are my rankings of the greatest diss tracks not including Killshot.
  1. No Vaseline, Ice Cube: Ice Cube took down NWA, Dr. Dre, and DJ Yella all in one track. The scary part about this track is that Ice Cube had all the inside information about N.W.A. and Dre 'selling out' while Ice Cube worked on becoming self made. The track has a nice beat to it as well.
  2. Hit 'Em Up, Tupac: Tupac and Biggie was the biggest rivalry of 90's rap. Both had massive followings, both were a big part of emerging record labels, and both left behind everlasting legacies. Tupac's anger and passion can be felt throughout the track.
  3. Who Shot Ya, Notorious B.I.G.: Speaking of Tupac vs. Biggie, Notorious B.I.G. would perform this song live to intimidate his West Coast rivals, namely Tupac. Some people say it's a diss track, some say it's just a mafia-esque track. You can be the judge on which one this is.
  4. Ether, Nas/The Takeover, Jay Z: Nas is one of the most underrated rappers of all time. When Nas took on Jay-Z with "Ether", he pulled no punches. Jay Z called Nas a "has-been" and downplayed his impact on rap, with Nas replying by calling out Jay Z for being misogynist and trying to brown-nose other rappers.

College Football Winners and Losers, Week Nine

10/27/2018

The rankings are coming out this week! Perhaps the most exciting thing to happen between this past Saturday and Wednesday regarding college football, we finally get to see who holds the cards in the playoff race.
  • Winner: Washington State: Escaping a tough Stanford contest is just what #14 Washington State needed in their quest for a playoff berth. The 41-38 win also gives the Cougars a road win over a ranked opponent, something they desperately need for their resume. If Colorado can get in the rankings and Washington can stay ranked, Mike Leach's squad can have more opportunities to suddenly make a good playoff push.
  • Winner: Jake Fromm: There were questions about Jake Fromm's legitimacy as Georgia's starting quarterback after the blowout loss to LSU a couple weeks ago. Fromm answered those questions with a 17-for-24 performance, throwing for 240 yards and three touchdowns as #7 Georgia put down #9 Florida, 36-17.
  • Winner: Kentucky: #12 Kentucky continues their magical run with a 15-14 road win over Missouri. Terry Wilson's two-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Conrad helped seal the deal for the Wildcats, proving that they don't need to rely on Benny Snell to have a tremendous day to win (Snell ran the ball 14 times for 67 yards). Up next for Kentucky is a gigantic home test against Georgia.
  • Loser: Texas: Honestly, I would've loved to have seen Texas make the playoff. The run they made after their opening week loss to Maryland was tremendous. Unfortunately, their secondary got torched by Oklahoma State receiver Tylan Wallace (10 receptions for 222 yards and two touchdowns). As a result, the Longhorns lost to the Cowboys, 38-35.
  • Loser: Washington: The slide continues for the Huskies as they fell to California, 12-10. What looked to be a promising season for the Huskies offensively has fallen into disarray as Jake Browning looked sloppy yet again.
  • Loser: Big Names Playing This Week: No Michigan, Ohio State, or Alabama playing considering the rankings come out this week? Bummer.
Other Winners: Georgia Southern, Kansas, Boston College
Other Losers: USC, teams ranked between 20 and 25, Colorado

Playoff Four
  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Michigan

Non-Traditional Basketball Powers That Can Make the Final Four

10/27/2018

If you are a fan of men's college basketball, you probably know the traditional basketball college powers that be. You know about Kentucky and their army of one-and-dones. You know about Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk. You probably know about the next North Carolina Tar Heel to become a member of the Charlotte Hornets. You probably know about Tom Izzo. You probably hate Duke. But which of the non-traditional basketball teams has a legitimate shot at making the Final Four this season?
  • Oregon: The obvious choice, Oregon has reeled in one of the best recruiting classes this season. With five-star players such as their gargantuan center Bol Bol and power forward Jalen Smith, Oregon may just dominate the entire Pac-12 this season.
  • USC: One team that may give Oregon a run for their money in the Pac-12 are the USC Trojans. Incoming freshmen Kevin Porter and Elijah Weaver look to make a sudden impact on the team. They look to help players like senior Bennie Boatwright get USC to that next step.
  • Tennessee: Junior Grant Williams returns along with junior Lamonte Turner and senior Admiral Schofield as Tennessee hopes to dominate in a suddenly competitive SEC. Tennessee's rebounding and balanced size may help them get to the big dance this season.
  • Nevada: If you're looking for a true mid major to make the Final Four this season the same way Loyola-Chicago did last year, look no further. This is a team that's fairly big and Jordan Caroline (17.7 ppg and 8.6 rpg last season) and the two senior Martins named Caleb (18.9 ppg and 5.4 rpg) and Cody (14 ppg, 6.3 rpg, and 4.7 apg) are all returning to take the Wolfpack far this year.
  • Auburn: Bruce Pearl generally constructs quality squads and this year should be no different. Losing Mustapha Heron to St. Johns will hurt, but Isaac Okoro is a nice pickup for Pearl. Three-point man Bryce Brown is a nice outside shooter for Pearl's squad as well and could make for being the Chauncey Billups of this team.

Nostalgia Game Review: Mario Golf

10/26/2018

Mario Golf broke ground on the Mario sports series, with games such as Mario Tennis and Mario Superstar Baseball following suit. Adding the Mario twist to sports that wouldn't appeal to young gamers otherwise made this series better.

The N64 version of Mario Golf was spectacular, with a wide range of characters to choose from along with the various modes you could play (including mini-golf). The Game Boy version seems like a more condensed version of the N64 game, coming without the numerous modes and characters. The terrain for the game is also not as detailed as its N64 brethren, with the course layouts being simplified for the Game Boy. That is not particularly a bad thing, as Game Boy players would not expect a detailed version of Torrey Pines on a 16-bit hardware system. Still, it would have been nice to see mini-golf mode be an option for the Game Boy version.

There are plenty of similarities between the Game Boy version and the N64 version. Much of the music and sound effects found in the N64 version are found in the Game Boy version and the shot mechanics are pretty much the same. You can also check out some of the best shots you've made in the Game Boy version as you can in the N64 version.

If you're looking for a game that you can take with you on the go and you're on a golf kick, pick up Mario Golf for the Game Boy. Just don't hit any other golfers with any shots while you're playing.

Early NBA Storylines for the Season

10/24/2018

The NBA season is under full swing and there are plenty of storylines to go around. With plenty of headlines to go around from the offseason, the regular season offers more news to the mix. What are the big storylines heading into the season?
  • What's Up With the Lakers? An 0-3 start has Laker fans a bit concerned. No, LeBron is not the problem. He has 27.3 ppg to go with 8.3 apg. In fact, the team as a whole is scoring 125.3 ppg, good for second in the NBA. Defensively, they're dead-last in ppg allowed with 131.7. The bench is also a bit of a concern, with a good chunk of the scoring coming from the starters. Their best chance to score a win in the next four games comes at Phoenix tonight: their next three after that consist of a fast-starting Denver Nuggets squads and road games against Minnesota and San Antonio.
  • The Pistons Are Clicking: Speaking of fast-starting, the Detroit Pistons are off to a 3-0 start. After LeBron left for the Lakers, the Central Division is looking for a new ruler. The Pistons appear to up to the task, as proven by Blake Griffin's 50-point game against the 76ers yesterday. If Dwane Casey can get the most out of this team, look out for the Pistons to make some noise in the wide-open Eastern Conference.
  • Other Slow Starters: The Lakers aren't the only team that is off to a sluggish start. The Houston Rockets (1-2), Oklahoma City Thunder (0-3), Boston Celtics (2-2), and the Utah Jazz (1-2) are also off to a bit of a slow start. Granted, it's only three or four games. But if these teams don't clean up their acts soon, they could end up in a hole that they cannot escape from.

Takeaways from Week Seven in the NFL

10/23/2018

The NFL playoff field is starting to take a bit of structure. Which teams are starting to build a bit of a sweat?
  • Jacksonville and Philadelphia Are in a Bit of Trouble: Last year's conference  finalists seem to be having a bit of trouble this season. Minnesota and New England struggled early on, but have picked up the pace. Now it's Jacksonville and Philadelphia who are having troubles. The Jaguars saw their QB situation rear its ugly head as Blake Bortles has turned to crap. He has posted a QBR of 34 ever since the Jaguars' Week 2 win over New England. Leonard Fournette being injured doesn't make things any better for the Jaguars. As for Philadelphia, Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills being terrible has hampered the Eagles secondary. This played a big part in the Eagles blowing a 17-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter against Carolina last Sunday, where the corners continually got burned on routes.
  • Dallas Might Actually Have a Great Receiver: Oakland's rebuilding process continues to be in full effect as Amari Cooper was traded to the Cowboys for a first-round pick. Cooper is a solid receiver who has great receiving hands and should help Dak Prescott immediately. Only question is will Prescott actually make good use of Cooper.
  • Cincinnati May Be On the Downturn: A 45-10 blowout loss to Kansas City in primetime was embarrassing for the Cincinnati Bengals. Andy Dalton posted a QBR of 43.2 in that game and the Bengals defense allowed Patrick Mahomes (358 passing yards, four touchdowns) to go crazy. Considering how tough Baltimore looks this year and Pittsburgh getting its act together will shape the division race, Cincinnati may be in some trouble heading down the stretch.

College Football Winners and Losers, Week Eight

10/20/2018

Another one of college football's titans went down in a week without many upsets. Who benefited from the fall of one of college football's mammoths?
  • Winner: Jim Harbaugh: Harbaugh's defense held rival Michigan State to just 94 total yards and made Brian Lewerke go 5-for-25 the entire game. #6 Michigan's masterful defensive performance led to a 21-7 victory over #24 MSU. It was Michigan's first road win against a ranked opponent since 2007 as well.
  • Winner: Purdue: Remember when the Boilermakers lost to Eastern Michigan in September? That seems like a while ago as Purdue has now rattled off four straight wins, dominating the second-best team in the nation, 49-20. Purdue overcame Dwayne Haskins's 470 passing yards with a big performance of their own: Rondale Moore had 12 catches for 170 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Winner: Jessie Lemonier: The junior defensive lineman for the Liberty Flames had a monster game against Idaho State, racking up nine total tackles, three sacks, and five tackles for loss. Six of Lemonier's tackles were solo tackles.
  • Winner: Alabama: Even if you spotted Alabama's opponents 28 points a game this season, the Crimson Tide would still be 7-1. The Tide rolled through another opponent, the victim being Tennessee this time. Alabama administered a 58-21 beating on the Volunteers with Tua Tagovailoa throwing for 306 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Loser: Ohio State: In the same week that Nick Bosa announced his intentions to withdraw from Ohio State to prepare for the NFL Draft, the Buckeyes get exposed in stopping the run against Purdue. They are still in the running for the playoff and have an easy schedule coming up. But can they shore up these problems in time for their big game against Michigan?
  • Loser: Brian Lewerke: 5 for 25 in a single game? Ouch.
Other Winners: Oklahoma, Iowa, Michigan fans
Other Losers: North Carolina State, Pac-12, Central Florida's future opponents

Playoff Four
  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Michigan

The Dead Things Are Back

10/20/2018

On Friday, the Florida Panthers defeated the Washington Capitals in a shootout, 6-5. This win doesn't mean much on the surface, except for the fact that Florida's win leaves the Detroit Red Wings as the only winless team in the NHL. Sitting at 0-5-2 and dead-last in the Atlantic Division, the Red Wings are already on the fast track to getting the No. 1 draft pick in next season's NHL Draft (#LoseForHughes).

Some Red Wing fans are completely on board with losing, as it signals the dire need for a rebuild. Aging, vestigial players such as Jonathan Ericsson, Frans Nielsen, and Nikolas Kronwall occupy the current roster, armed with hefty contracts and deals. Stars who were supposed to bigger such as Darren Helm haven't been around. The Red Wings have allowed the most goals per game in the NHL with 4.6 goals allowed. They also aren't scoring as much, ranking 27th in goals scored per game (2.1). However, the organization, namely Ken Holland, has been steadfast on trying to compete, not putting much effort into the rebuilding process.

On the plus side, the power play has been okay, ranking 15th in the NHL (22.7 %). The Wings are also killing off penalties well, ranking seventh in the NHL in penalty killing (82.1%). Still, the situation in the Motor City seems dire for a franchise that has seen one of the longest playoff streaks suddenly come to an end. The fall from grace from when they barely lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference Semifinals in 2013 seems astronomical. There is some good news as Steve Yzerman is stepping down from a successful stint in Tampa Bay to work in an advisory role in the organization. Maybe he can turn the Red Wings' fortunes around?
