AL Central Preview

3/11/2019

Next, we move on to the AL Central, which... sucks. Any of these teams has a legitimate cause to not making the postseason. More than one team is rebuilding and the top dog in this division almost shed some of their bulky contracts to try and get younger. Will Cleveland win this division by default this season?
  • Top Dog: Cleveland Indians: By default. The Indians almost traded Corey Kluber to San Diego and shedded Edwin Encarnacion's contract to get younger and to subtract from their payroll. Cleveland does have some things going for it. That includes a lineup with Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez and a rotation with Kluber and Trevor Bauer. However, a weakened bullpen, especially without a bona fide closer, will probably spell doom for Cleveland this season.
  • Division Dark Horse This Season: Minnesota Twins: The Twins were hampered by injuries last season, but have added a big bat in Nelson Cruz to accompany Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco. Will the Twins have enough arms to overtake Cleveland in the Central?
  • Rebuilding: Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, and Detroit Tigers: The White Sox swung and missed on both Bryce Harper and Manny Machado in the off-season. Still, they could go after Dallas Keuchel or give Craig Kimbrel a long-term deal if they wanted considering they have money to spend. The Royals and Tigers are in rebuilding phases that will probably take at least two years to complete. Of these three teams, the closest to competing is Chicago, which has power in its upcoming lineup in Eloy Jimenez and Yoan Moncada.
